Shaan-e-Awadh - Exquisite EkTaar Chikankari Set
Farshi and Chatta Patti Gharara Sets
The farshi gharara is the dress of the Awadhi bride: wide, pleated trousers that sweep the floor, worn with a short kurti and a long dupatta. Chatta patti, also written chattapatti or chatapati, is the patchwork of fabric strips from which the finest ones are made. Tehzeeb makes both pure farshi gharara and chatta patti sets, hand embroidered in Lucknow and cut for the wearer.
The collection includes bridal sets in red and gold, ivory sets with ek taar and mukaish, and lighter lucknowi gharara sets for the mehndi and sangeet. The flare, the length of the trail, the colours of the strips and the weight of the dupatta are all decided with you.
A gharara set takes months, so send us your date and colour on WhatsApp first; we will reply with a design and a timeline.
Questions we are asked
What is a farshi gharara?
A gharara gathered at the knee whose flare is long enough to trail on the floor (farsh). It is the traditional bridal and formal dress of Lucknow and Awadh, worn with a hip-length kurti and a dupatta of at least two and a half metres.
What does chatta patti mean?
Patchwork: narrow strips of silk, brocade or velvet in different colours joined edge to edge, with the seams covered by gota or embroidery. A chatta patti gharara can hold several hundred joins before the embroidery begins, and the strips must be matched in weight so the flare falls evenly.
Can a gharara set be made for a bride outside Lucknow?
Yes. Measurements are taken by video and from a garment that fits, and we ship worldwide. Heavy sets are lined and packed to travel; we tell you the transit time and duties for your country.
How heavy is a bridal gharara?
Heavier than a lehenga of the same work, because of the fabric in the flare and the gote at the knee. We balance the embroidery between the gharara, the kurti and the dupatta so it wears comfortably over a long evening, and we can make a lighter version for the other functions.
