Lucknowi Chikankari Suits and Kurta Sets

The chikankari suit is the piece Lucknow is known for: a kurta, a bottom and a dupatta embroidered as one set. Tehzeeb's suits are hand embroidered in ek taar, do taar and haath jaali on pure cotton, mulmul, georgette, organza and silk, and every set is made to order rather than taken from a shelf.

Within the collection you will find plain-cut everyday suits, ek taar sets with a matching dupatta for festive wear, and heavier pieces with mukaish, kamdani or zardosi for weddings. The kurta length, the sleeve, the neckline and the dupatta weight are all decided with you.

Each suit page has a WhatsApp button. Send us the one you like and we will reply with fabric and colour options, the embroidery close up, and a date.

Questions we are asked

What is the difference between a chikankari suit and a kurta set?

Nothing in the making; the words are used for the same thing. A chikankari suit, or kurta set, is a kurta with a matching bottom (palazzo, straight pant, salwar or gharara) and usually a dupatta, embroidered to go together. Tehzeeb makes all three pieces as one commission.

Is the embroidery hand done?

Yes, entirely. Tehzeeb's suits are hand embroidered by artisans in Lucknow. Turn any piece over and the back shows the thread ends and small irregularities that machine embroidery never has.

Can a suit be made in my size and length?

Yes. Because each set is made to order, it is cut to your measurements, taken by video or from a garment that fits you, and the kurta length, sleeve and neckline are chosen with you.

Which fabric should I choose for a chikankari suit?

Cotton and mulmul for daily and summer wear; georgette for a softer fall at festive occasions; organza and silk for weddings, where they carry mukaish and zardosi well. Tell us where you will wear it and we will suggest the fabric.
